Art Inspired Interior Design

Art has the power to tell your story, transport you to your favorite places and set the tone of your home. Yet, too often, it is the last design element to be added to the decor. I find that homeowners get caught up in furniture for the sake of function and color scheme to reflect the trends of suit their preferences, but overlook the power of art to personalize their home. My sense is that most consider art to be an indulgence and honestly – find it intimidating. It is my pleasure to demystify the selection of art by bringing to light what inspires you and guide you to artwork that will set your space apart.

Here are a few tips to empower you in your quest for the art to compliment your home and bring beauty to your world:

1) Shop local.

There are so many wonderful art venues and gifted artists right here in Chester and Delaware counties. Take advantage of art shows at local art centers. Stroll in a gallery. Listen to your gut. Note artist’s work that resonates with you. There is no pressure to buy. Don’t worry about the color scheme or size right now. Just take it in. The stuff you love will linger with you and guide you ultimately to the perfect pieces to compliment your unique space.

Recently, I had the opportunity to explore local art collections and indulge in the spirit of creativity the Collector’s Home Tour that was planned as a prelude to the Chester County Studio Tour later in the month. Each home was entirely unique from a custom built Craftsmen style home in Marshallton to a curiously distinctive restored barn. It was a great on the impact of art to create a distinctive home.

2) Do you!

This clients art collection is so “her”

So you like bold colors. That could add some much needed punch to a neutral (or not) place in your home. Are you concerned that realistic renderings are boring? Psh! it’s about what stirs your heart. Maybe it brings up fond childhood memories. Or maybe that abstract piece makes you feel like you’re flying through space. Go with it. Some art just makes you laugh. We all need that!
I love it when my clients have art that they are thrilled about. It tells me so much about them from the start.

3) Consider your decor.

The choice of art reflects the clients’ love of nature and creates a focal point for this sitting room.

I know what I said earlier… But when it comes to actually place it in your home, I can help you with considering the best choice for the mood that you wish to convey. In a bedroom, you may prefer a tranquil scene.

Surround yourself with what gives you peace.

Whereas a more dynamic image be just the thing for in great room where you entertain. Proportion matters. Smaller formats work best in intimate spaces. Go big for impact on large walls or consider a well chosen collection that compliment one another. Framing can be an art form in itself. Let me guide you. And yes, it’s good to consider the color scheme of the room. Why not begin with the art and let it drive the design?

Go ahead and indulge in the art that you love. You will savor its beauty for years to come.
