It all started with a piano…

“Not a huge focus”, they said, when they initially called.

This professional couple had recently moved from Massachusetts to the Broad Run community in West Chester and asked me to merely advise them on the placement of their recently acquired baby grand piano.

We agreed that the unused room adjacent to the entry was the best spot. At that time, it was serving as a holding tank for furniture that they’d had for years and didn’t know what to to do with. After all, they are frugal New Englanders…

You gotta love the piano template that we dragged from room to room.

However, when I pointed out that this space could be transformed into an inviting “parlor” to entertain friends and family, as well as a cozy place to read separate from family room, they began to dream…

Happiness delivered!

They had never worked with a designer or had the opportunity to design an entire room. The idea was a bit daunting. So we started small. The vision started with a rug and two reading chairs.

Among the 5 rug options that I presented, their eyes were clearly draw to this soft blue and ivory Ushak design.

When I showed them a layout incorporating chaise lounges. The dream got a bit bigger… They selected this gracious style and we selected a custom fabric, black iron nailheads and black finish for the legs to coordinate with the black finish of the piano.

I suggested wallpaper to add warmth and charm. This woven paper with a subtle geometric pattern is perfectly suited to their updated Traditional style. Then they decided to upgrade the chandelier to complement the decor. The minimal lines of this worked well with their wallpaper choice.

Finishing touches bring the design together.

The storyboard helped them to envision their dream coming true.

Why not add wainscotting to elevate the look?! Lastly, we selected a classic round mirror for a bit of sparkle. This previously overlooked space has become their favorite room in the house!
