The Return of “the Den”

Yes, this word appears in my business name, Decorating Den Interiors. In its defense, “den” is not a dowdy term. Thanks to its multipurpose nature, dens are actually making a comeback in homes throughout the country.

Dens of the Past

Who remembers “the den” of the ’70s in their parent’s or grandparent’s home? Back the, the den may have had wood paneling on the walls and a shag carpet – even an ashtray. It was a quiet retreat, usually for the man of the house. In my childhood home, it was where Dad retreated after a long day at work to read the newspaper- and maybe enjoy a glass of scotch. Also,he stored some paperwork in a file cabinet and wrote bills here, sometimes.

The Meaning of “Den” for Today

Besides being defined as “a shelter for wild animals”, the den is also known as “a small room where people can pursue activities in private”. Since we no longer need a place for storing papers, dens can take on other features like a quiet place for hobbies or a game room. In the past few years, the pandemic’s lockdown period has reshaped how homeowners think about sharing spaces in their home. Open floor plans may be attractive for entertaining. However after a point, there is a need for a personal space to recharge and focus. Recently, there has been a shift to creating multipurpose den spaces to meet the unique needs of various members of the household.

Since many are still working remotely, many homeowners are calling for ways to adapt their home to offer a work/life balance. Flexibility is key.  This den area adjacent to my clients office area, offers this hardworking chemist a place to step away from his responsibilities and enjoy some good music. Sliding doors can be just the thing to provide privacy.

Each generation gravitates to dens for different reasons. Empty nesters appreciate having alone time to pursue their pastimes. This is “Jane’s Room”. It offers the lady of the house a place to get away when her husband is watching sports, and enjoy making family scrapbooks. The sleeper sofa and adaptable “snooze box” ottoman offers beds for guests, when they visit.

Active professionals with families are using these spaces as home gyms or studios. Real estate agents have been referring to these dens as “Zoom Rooms” – the perfect niche for entrepreneurial types.
